In 2023, the then-acting U.S. Surgeon General released a report that brought our attention to a phenomenon known as the loneliness epidemic. The report states that about half of U.S. adults agree that they are experiencing measurable levels of loneliness, characterized by a lack of social connections and community opportunities.
The loneliness epidemic hits adults aged 65 and older especially hard. The Surgeon General’s report warns that loneliness increases the chances of heart disease, depression, anxiety, stroke and dementia. When loneliness is compounded with hearing loss, social isolation can be even more severe.

How Untreated Hearing Loss Contributes to Social Isolation
If you’re living with untreated hearing loss, you may find yourself—consciously or unconsciously—pulling away from your social networks. Hearing is a critical part of communication and bonding; impede that connection and communication becomes much more difficult.
Difficulty participating in social settings can lead to embarrassment, which may cause you to avoid social interactions altogether, and frustration and anger, which may damage the relationships you have. This causes alienation from loved ones and potential new connections, leading to loneliness.
How Hearing Aids Can Help
The good news is that wearing hearing aids has been shown to combat loneliness effectively. A study done in the spring of this year found that, in a group of adults ages 70 to 84, the members who received hearing aids improved their social connections and reported feeling less lonely, while the loneliness levels of the members who did not receive hearing aids worsened.
This study is a breakthrough, but it’s not particularly surprising to us at Bangor Audiology. We’ve discussed at length the benefits that hearing aids will bring to quality of life and social connection, on top of hearing health and general well-being. Hearing aids give you the ability to follow conversations without embarrassment or frustration, and increase your confidence so you can continue to pursue the hobbies and activities that you enjoy.
